Following are some excellent wargames that available very inexpensively
through sources such as
eBay.Com.
1. Hubert Cater (Battlefront/Fury Software) Strategic Command
- Simulates World War II in Western Europe, North Africa,
and Western Russia on a strategical level. One of my all-time favorite games. Its
sequel is currently under development. There are a number of user created scenarios
available as well as additional mods and an active multiplayer group.
2. Sid Meier's (Firaxis) Gettysburg - Simulates the battle of Gettysburg in one of
the only RTS games I've ever played that isn't a clickfest. Includes a large variety
of scenarios, as well as a campaign feature that links many of the scenarios together
to form a campaign.
3. Sierra's Civil War Generals 2 - An excellent turn-based tactical game that Sierra
put out some years ago. It was a Windows game but requires you to run Windows Compatibility
in order to get it to work in XP. However, it is well worth it. It includes a veritable
plethora of scenarios as well as a number of campaigns which link the scenarios
together. There is also a still active user community for multiplayer games and
mods.
4. Slitherine's Chariots of War - A strategical and tactical simulation of
warfare in earth's early history. Allows you to play such nations such as Egypt,
the Hittites, Babylonians, and Israelites. Slitherine has done an excellent job
and this game is sure to impress. A full-game demo is available
here. If you don't mind simplistic graphics you might also like
Legion (try the demo before you buy it).
5. Slitherine's Spartan - Built around the same engine as Chariots of War,
this simulates the Greek Spartans. A demo is available
here.
6. Sega's Medieval: Total War (and Viking Expansion) - An amazing
turn-based strategical level engine combined with a 3D tactical engine offers
ingenious and extensive middle ages wargaming. If you can afford it I recommend
the sequel - which offers even more amazing features, especially at the tactical
level.
I haven't played the following games, but they are inexpensive
and look decent to me:
1. Paradox Interactive's Two Thrones - Appears to be built on the
same engine as Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron.
